MTAC Certificate of Merit
Certificate of Merit (CM) is an evaluation program that was created and developed by the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC) in 1934 and has been growing stronger ever since. The CM program is based on a solid foundation of systematic progression through the levels.
Students in CM are evaluated on their technique, ear training, sight reading and performance skills; there is also a written theory test at each level.
Goals of Certificate of Merit
*To provide a systematic and comprehensive plan to develop performance skill, technique, ear training and sight reading skills, and understanding of music theory;
*To provide practical goals goals to help students maintain a steady and focused appreciation of their musical studies;
*To encourage students to strive for musical excellence;
*To create opportunities in which students may share their music with others.
